sT. LOUIS CITY VS ASTON VILLA FC

St. Louis, MO - 7/30/2025 - On hot and humid Wednesday Night St. Louis City welcomed Aston Villa FC. This marked the first time a Premier League team played at Energizer Park. With City in the middle of their MLS season, and Aston Villa continuing on their US preseason tour, this match was meant to be a confidence booster for both teams. With questions around a few key players for Aston Villa this was a good chance for everyone to show what they can do.

The first half started fast for Aston Villa getting a majority of the opening chances. Morgan Rogers put them up 1-0 with a goal from Donyell Malen in the 14th minute. After this City settled into what I could only describe as a bend don’t break defensive 1st half. I will say Jaziel Orozco again showed why he deserved his first team contract holding his own.

The second half started off with a host of substitutions as again this is just a friendly. Ollie Watkins delivered a header 5 yards out from a Matty Cash cross to put Aston Villa up 2-0 in the 56th minute. City would show their dangerous counter attack though and Cedric Teuchert would tally one for City in the 60th minute. This would be the final goal of the night.

Next up City has a little bit of a break with their next match August 9th as they welcome Nashville SC to Energizer Park.

Opinion: City really made the most of their chances. Getting Fallou Fall some touches with the 1st team under this situation is important. You could see there were some miss timed passes as he got used to his new team, but the more he played the more he seemed to settle in. I know it was only a friendly but a 2-1 loss is not a bad outcome. It should allow them to build a little confidence coming back to hopefully stay off any wooden spoon thoughts.

St louis city sc vs portland timbers

St. Louis, MO - 07/13/2025 - St. Louis City SC held off the rain and the Portland Timbers on their way to a much needed 3 points in front of another sellout crowd at Energizer Park Sunday Night. With his first MLS brace Marcel Hartel led City to an impressive 2-1 win over a Timbers team sitting in 5th place in the Western Conference.

After a quick start by City with 3 early shot attempts in the first 10 minutes the Timbers weathered the storm. David Da Costa would put Portland up 1-0 in the 19th minute off a great run in by him and a defensive miscue from City. The score would remain tied through the end of the first half with Roman Burki making a key save late on Da Costa again.

The second half would start the same way the first half ended with a Burki save in a De Costa shot attempt. City would ride that momentum to Hartel’s first goal to tie the game in the 54th minute. A moment City fans have been waiting for happened in the 66th minute when Eduard Lowen was subbed on. Lowen who has been slated for limited minutes before the match made a noticeable impact to the confidence of the City players. Lowen’s set piece attempt in the 67th minute directly led to Hartel’s second goal and City’s final 2-1 lead.

City Positive notes: Defender Jaziel Orozco making his second straight start was pretty solid. Clearing a ball off the line and pushing up field when he found the space. Josh Yaro who was frustrated after the Timbers early goal refocused and had what I would say a fantastic second half.

Negatives: Celio Pompeu would leave the game in the second half with what looked like a shoulder injury.

What’s next: City travels to Dallas for a matchup with FC Dallas who has lost 4 straight but still sits 3 points above St. Louis

St. Louis City SC vs seattle sounders

St Louis, MO - St. Louis City SC (2-2-0) welcomed the Seattle Sounders (1-1-2) to Energizer Park on Saturday March 15th, 2025 to a sellout crowd of 22,422. This was a physical game with both sides wanting to get to their style of play. Eduard Lowen put City SC up early with a stunning free kick goal in just the 17th minute. While Seattle dominated the possession game after that goal, but still was unable to get past late replacement goaltender Ben Lundt for City SC. Lundt was a late replacement for Roman Burki who had suffered a broken hand in training. Burki had led the club to 3 consecutive clean sheets, and with the help of Lundt City SC made it 4 clean sheets to start the year. The Sounders came in also dealing with multiple injuries to start their season as well. Paul Arriola suffered a season ending ACL team in their last match against the Cruz Azul in their Champions Cup.

City SC will travel next to Philadelphia to take on the Union. The Sounders will play host to Houston for their next matchup.
